Tips

How to make a great fabric line sheet

Structuring a fabric line sheet

On a fabric line sheet, show each quality once with its colorways as swatches and list fiber content, weight, width, finish, cut minimum, cut price and bolt price. Group by fiber (linen, cotton, wool, denim, knits) and add a short use note, such as shirting or upholstery. Sample card pricing and the credit rule belong in the terms box at the foot of the page.

Typical fabric wholesale terms

Textiles are priced per yard or meter with breaks at bolt quantities (cut yardage at one price, full bolts often 15–20% less). Minimum cuts of 5–15 yards are common for trade accounts. Sample cards or swatches are often sold at a small cost and credited against the first order.

What fabric buyers look for

Fabric buyers (sewing shops, designers, small manufacturers) buy on hand feel: weight in gsm or ounces, width, fiber content, weave and shrinkage. They also need stock depth; nothing frustrates a designer more than a fabric that disappears mid-production. Mark what is continuous stock and what is a limited run.

FAQ

Fabric line sheet questions

How do I show colorways on a fabric line sheet?

Use one block per fabric quality with small swatches and color codes. Note that screen and print colors differ and offer sample cards for accurate matching.

Should fabric be priced per yard or per meter?

Use the unit your customers buy in, and show the other in brackets if you sell internationally. Put the unit next to every price so there is no confusion.

Should a line sheet show retail prices?

Show both: the wholesale price is what the buyer pays you, and the MSRP (suggested retail price) tells them their margin at a glance. Most boutiques expect at least a 2x markup, so a sheet with both numbers answers their first question before they have to email you.
