Tips

How to make a great clothing lookbook

Sequencing a clothing lookbook

Plan the apparel lookbook as outfits that tell the season's story, usually 12 to 20 looks. Open with the strongest look, alternate full-length and detail shots, and keep the same model, location and light so the clothes do the talking. Number every look and list the style numbers and colors under it; buyers mark looks while flipping and then build the order from the line sheet.

What clothing buyers look for

Apparel buyers plan by delivery: they need to know which styles land in which month, the size range, and how deep each color goes. Make every style easy to cross-reference with your lookbook by using identical style numbers in both. Fiber content and country of origin are required on garment labels in many markets, and buyers will want them on the sheet as well.

FAQ

Clothing lookbook questions

How many looks should a clothing lookbook have?

Twelve to twenty looks covers most capsule collections. Every style on the line sheet should appear in at least one look, and a closing index page that maps look numbers to style numbers saves buyers time.

Do lookbooks include prices?

Usually not on every page. A lookbook sells the mood and styling; prices and minimums live on the line sheet. Many brands put style numbers on each look and send the line sheet alongside, or add a compact price index at the back.
