Tips

How to make a great spice line sheet

Structuring a spice line sheet

Lay out a spice line sheet with jars, vials and gift sets on separate pages so each display type is clear. Each spice gets its origin, net weight, flavor note, allergen note for blends, case pack and both prices. Grinding format (whole, ground, flakes) should be explicit, and the bulk section belongs at the end with prices per pound.

Typical spice wholesale terms

Retail jars typically wholesale at around 50% of retail in cases of 6 or 12, with a $150–$250 opening order. Bulk spices for foodservice are priced per pound or kilo and can move with crop prices, so print an effective date. Best-before dates of 18–36 months are typical for whole spices, shorter for ground.

What spice buyers look for

Specialty grocers and gift shops want spices with origin, freshness and clear use ideas; restaurants buy bulk and care about consistency and price per pound. Give each spice its origin and a one-line use, and mark blends that are salt-free or free of common allergens.

FAQ

Spice line sheet questions

How should spice blends be presented on a line sheet?

List the main ingredients, allergens and heat level for each blend, plus the suggested use. Shops sell blends by recipe, so a use note helps them merchandise.

How should spices be priced for wholesale?

Retail jars commonly wholesale at about half of retail. Bulk spices are priced per pound or kilo based on current crop costs, so review them often and date the price list.

Should a line sheet show retail prices?

Show both: the wholesale price is what the buyer pays you, and the MSRP (suggested retail price) tells them their margin at a glance. Most boutiques expect at least a 2x markup, so a sheet with both numbers answers their first question before they have to email you.
